The treatment itself is straightforward: a medicated cream applied from the neck down and left overnight, repeated after a week, with close contacts treated at the same time even if they have no symptoms yet. Skipping the contacts is the classic reason it comes back.
Expect the itch to continue for two to four weeks after successful treatment, that is the skin reacting to dead mites, not treatment failure. Itching beyond a month, or new burrows appearing, is the point to return for review.
