Converting Both a Car and Motorbike Licence in Phuket
In Phuket, more people ride motorbikes than almost anywhere else in Thailand. If you have a valid motorbike licence at home, convert it here. Do not assume your car licence covers you on a scooter.
A car licence and a motorbike licence are two separate applications with separate fees. You can do both at the same DLT visit. One medical certificate covers both applications. You do not need two certificates.
I see expats every week who have been riding around Phuket for months on an unconverted foreign motorbike licence. If you are in an accident in that situation, your travel or health insurance may not cover you. That is not a minor technicality.
Why Not Just Keep Using Your Foreign Licence or IDP?

Do not drive while you sort this out. An expired foreign licence with no IDP and no Thai licence means you are effectively uninsured in every meaningful sense.

On the day of your appointment, expect a colour blindness check, depth perception test, and a basic reaction time check. These are done in-office and take about ten minutes. They are aptitude checks, not clinical tests.
The theory test is an area of genuine inconsistency. Some DLT offices waive it for foreign licence holders converting an equivalent licence. Others currently require it.
