The HPV vaccine is available at Takecare Clinic Phuket with no appointment needed. Gardasil 9 covers nine strains of HPV linked to cervical, anal, throat, penile, and vulvar cancers, as well as genital warts. Most adults need three doses over six months. You can start your series in Phuket and finish it anywhere in the world.

A long-stay expat living in Chalong asked me last month whether she was too old to bother with the HPV vaccine at 38. She had never been offered it in her home country, assumed it was only for teenagers, and had been putting it off for two years. She is not unusual. I see this pattern regularly across Phuket’s expat community, from Rawai to Bang Tao, and among tourists who have decided their health is worth an afternoon of their holiday.

The short answer is: it is probably not too late, and getting vaccinated here is straightforward. This guide covers who should get the HPV vaccine, which vaccine to choose, how the dose schedule works if you cannot stay in Phuket for the full series, and what it will cost you at a private clinic in Patong.

What Does the HPV Vaccine Actually Protect Against?

Most people think cervical cancer and stop there. That is only part of the picture.

HPV is linked to cancers of the cervix, anus, throat, penis, vulva, and vagina. It also causes genital warts. Gardasil 9, the vaccine we use, covers nine HPV strains: seven that cause cancer and two that cause genital warts.

Throat cancer linked to HPV is rising in many countries. It is underdiagnosed because people do not connect it to a sexually transmitted infection. If you have never been vaccinated, this matters regardless of your gender.

Gardasil 9 or Gardasil 4: Which One Should You Choose?

Gardasil 4 covers four strains. Gardasil 9 covers nine. The five additional strains in Gardasil 9 are all high-risk cancer-causing types.

Gardasil 9 costs more per dose. At Phuket private clinics, Gardasil 4 runs roughly 3,390 to 3,600 THB per dose. Gardasil 9 runs roughly 6,900 to 8,900 THB per dose. That is a real difference over a three-dose course.

My recommendation is Gardasil 9 for almost every patient. If you are paying out of pocket for a vaccine that protects you for decades, the broader coverage is worth the extra cost. Gardasil 9 is now the clinical standard in most countries, and it is what we stock at Takecare Clinic Phuket.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine in Phuket?

The vaccine works best before first exposure to HPV, which is why it is recommended from age nine onward. But most adults who walk into my clinic have already been sexually active for years.

That does not disqualify you. The vaccine protects against strains you have not yet encountered. For someone with a new partner, multiple partners, or no prior vaccination history, that protection still has real value.

For men who have sex with men, the vaccine is especially relevant. Anal HPV infection carries a significantly elevated cancer risk in this group, and genital wart transmission is common. I see a fair number of gay and bisexual visitors in Patong who have never been told the vaccine applies to them. Gardasil 9 is approved for males aged 9 to 45.

What If You Are Over 26: Is It Too Late?

No. But the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes.

Under 26, the vaccine is straightforwardly recommended for anyone not yet vaccinated. Between 27 and 45, the decision depends on your sexual history, risk factors, and whether you have had any prior doses. Most international guidelines describe this as a shared decision between you and your doctor, not a blanket rule.

If you are an expat in Phuket who missed the vaccine in your home country, or a traveller in your 30s or 40s who never had this conversation with a GP, I can work through it with you in a single visit. That is exactly the kind of conversation I have at Takecare Clinic Phuket every week.

How Many HPV Vaccine Doses Do You Need and When?

The schedule depends on your age when you start. Under 15: two doses, given six to twelve months apart. Over 15, or any age if your immune system is suppressed: three doses. The second dose comes one to two months after the first. The third comes six months after the first.

If you miss a dose, you do not restart the series. You pick up where you left off. The gap between doses can extend without losing effectiveness.

Starting Your HPV Vaccine Course While Travelling Through Phuket

This comes up constantly at a Phuket clinic. Someone is here for two or three weeks, wants to start, and will be back in the UK, Australia, or Germany before dose two is due.

That is not a problem. You can start your series here and finish it at any qualified clinic anywhere in the world. What matters is that you leave with proper documentation: the vaccine brand, batch number, dose number, and date. We provide this in a format your home clinic can read, including an international vaccination record if you need one.

Do not wait until you have three months of uninterrupted time in one place. Starting the series is always the right move.

Side Effects, Safety, and Who Should Wait

Side effects are usually mild. A sore arm for a day or two, occasionally some redness or swelling at the injection site. Some patients feel tired or have a mild headache. These settle on their own.

Serious reactions are rare. If you have had a severe allergic reaction to a prior HPV vaccine dose, or a known severe allergy to yeast, tell me before we proceed. The vaccine should be deferred during pregnancy. It is safe after delivery and during breastfeeding.

No pre-vaccination blood test is required. Being sexually active, or having a current HPV infection, does not mean the vaccine will not help you. It still covers strains you have not yet been exposed to.

Getting the HPV Vaccine at Takecare Clinic Phuket

Walk in. No appointment needed. We have Gardasil 9 in stock, stored in a proper cold-chain setup, and you will speak with an English-speaking physician before every injection.

If you want to combine this visit with sexual health testing in Phuket, that is straightforward. Many patients do both on the same afternoon. Our STD testing in Phuket covers HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. If PrEP is something you are weighing up, we can discuss that at the same visit.

We see patients from across the whole island: Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Laguna, Cherng Talay, Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong, and Phuket Town. You do not need to be staying nearby to come in.

Walk-in HPV vaccination is available at Takecare Clinic Phuket in Patong with no appointment needed. We offer Gardasil 9 for all genders, flexible dose scheduling for travellers who cannot complete their series in one trip, and same-visit STD testing if you want a full sexual health check at the same time. Speak directly with an English-speaking physician any day during our extended hours. We serve tourists, expats, and residents from across Phuket island.

Can I start my HPV vaccine course in Phuket and finish it back home?

Yes, and this is one of the most common setups I see. You get dose one here, and doses two and three at any qualified clinic in your home country. We document the vaccine brand, batch number, and date so your home clinic has everything they need. Starting the series is always the right move, even if you cannot finish it in Phuket.

I am over 40. Is it worth getting the HPV vaccine now?

Possibly yes, depending on your history. If you have not been vaccinated before and have had new or multiple partners, there are likely HPV strains you have not encountered yet. A quick conversation at Takecare Clinic Phuket will tell you whether vaccination makes sense for your situation. It is not a blanket yes for everyone over 40, but it is worth discussing rather than dismissing.

Does the HPV vaccine protect men, including against anal and throat cancer?

Yes. Gardasil 9 is approved for males aged 9 to 45 and protects against penile cancer, anal cancer, throat cancer linked to HPV, and genital warts. Men who have sex with men are at particularly high risk for anal HPV-related cancers. Most of my male patients in Patong have never been told this applies to them, which is exactly why I raise it at every relevant visit.

How much does the HPV vaccine cost in Phuket, and is Gardasil 9 worth the extra cost?

Gardasil 4 runs roughly 3,390 to 3,600 THB per dose at Phuket private clinics. Gardasil 9 ranges from roughly 6,900 to 8,900 THB per dose. For most people making an active choice, Gardasil 9 is worth it: nine strains versus four, including five additional high-risk cancer types that Gardasil 4 misses entirely. Contact Takecare Clinic Phuket directly for current pricing.

Do I need an STD test before getting the HPV vaccine?

No. There is no medical requirement for STD testing before the HPV vaccine. That said, if you are sexually active and have not been tested recently, combining both on the same visit is an efficient use of your time. We offer comprehensive STD testing at the same clinic, and the physician can advise whether any additional testing makes sense for your situation.

I missed my second HPV dose. Do I have to start over?

No. You pick up where you left off, regardless of how long the gap has been. The series does not restart if you miss a dose. Come in, tell us what dose you received and when, and we continue from there.

I had a night out in Patong last week. Can I still get the HPV vaccine now?

Yes. Recent sexual activity does not affect your eligibility for the vaccine. If you have specific concerns after a night in Patong, an STD screen alongside the vaccine is a sensible idea, and we can do both on the same visit at Takecare Clinic Phuket.
