Genital warts are caused by HPV types 6 and 11 and can appear weeks to months after exposure. They are treatable, and same-day assessment and treatment can start at Takecare Clinic Phuket with no appointment needed. Removing visible warts does not remove the virus, so recurrence is possible, but the right approach reduces that risk significantly.
You noticed something a few days after a night out in Patong, or it showed up mid-trip and you have been hoping it would go away on its own. It has not. What you are looking at might be a genital wart, and it is one of the more common things I see at this clinic, particularly in the months that follow high season. I see it in tourists with three days left on their visa, in expats who have been putting it off for weeks, and in couples where only one person has noticed anything yet.
Genital warts are treatable, and you do not need an appointment to be seen. The thing I want you to understand before anything else: treatment removes the visible warts, but not the underlying HPV infection. That distinction matters, and most of what you need to know about recurrence comes down to that one fact.
What Genital Warts Actually Look Like
They do not always look the way people expect. Some are small, flesh-coloured bumps, smooth and easy to miss. Others cluster together in a cauliflower-like shape, or appear flat against the skin.
They can appear on the penis, scrotum, vulva, vaginal opening, or inside the vagina. They also appear around the anus, which patients often miss because they are not looking there. I regularly see cases where the anal area is the only site affected.
The texture is usually slightly rough compared to surrounding skin, and most are painless, though some patients notice mild irritation or itching. If something is bleeding, painful, or changing quickly, come in the same day rather than waiting.
How Long After Sex Can Genital Warts Appear
This is the question I get most often, and the answer is genuinely wide. Most warts appear two to three months after exposure. But the window can stretch to eight months or longer in some people.
What this means practically: if you had unprotected sex in Patong three months ago and something has just appeared, that exposure is entirely plausible as the source. The virus does not give you a neat two-week notification the way some infections do.
It also means someone can carry and transmit HPV without ever having a visible wart themselves.
Treatment Options for Genital Warts in Phuket
Which treatment I recommend depends on the number of warts, their location, and whether you are managing this during a short holiday or as a longer-stay resident.
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart tissue. It is quick, can be done at the first visit, and works well for small clusters and single lesions. Most patients need two to four sessions spaced a week or two apart.
Trichloroacetic acid, known as TCA, is a chemical applied directly to the wart during the clinic visit. It is particularly useful for warts in moist areas and also requires repeat applications. Both cryotherapy and TCA have strong clearance rates for visible warts when done consistently.
Topical creams such as imiquimod and podophyllotoxin are prescribed for home use between visits. They take several weeks to work but suit patients who can maintain a regular application routine. These can be prescribed to take with you if you are leaving the island.
For larger or persistent lesions that have not responded to simpler methods, I refer for electrocautery, where wart tissue is removed using electrical current.
Why Genital Warts Come Back After Treatment
Treatment clears what is visible. It does not eliminate HPV from the surrounding tissue. The virus can remain dormant in the skin around the treated area and reactivate, and that is most likely to happen in the first three months after treatment. That window is when I see most recurrences.
Recurrence is more likely if you smoke, if your immune system is under pressure from illness or disrupted sleep, or if you have continued exposure to a partner who also carries HPV. Travel, especially with irregular sleep, heavy drinking, and heat stress, can suppress immune function enough to tip the balance.
Reducing recurrence means treating all visible warts completely, not stopping early because they look better. It also means your partner being assessed rather than assumed to be unaffected.
HPV Vaccination After a Genital Warts Diagnosis
Patients often ask whether there is any point getting vaccinated if they already have warts. Based on current evidence, yes, with some nuance. The vaccine does not treat an existing HPV infection or clear current warts.
What the evidence suggests is that vaccination may reduce the chance of future warts by protecting against HPV types you have not yet encountered. For patients who have only been exposed to one HPV type, the vaccine still offers protection against others. For younger patients especially, the benefit is real, and I discuss this at the consultation.
Getting Tested and Treated for Genital Warts in Phuket
Genital warts do not appear in isolation as often as patients assume. A significant number of people who come in with warts also have another STI present, most commonly chlamydia or gonorrhoea. I recommend a full STI panel at the same visit, not because something is necessarily wrong, but because treating warts while missing a concurrent infection is incomplete care.
At Takecare Clinic Phuket, you can walk in without an appointment, be seen by an English-speaking physician, and have a clinical examination, treatment start, and STI testing all in the same visit. For tourists with limited time, cryotherapy or TCA can begin the same day. Topical prescriptions can be issued to take with you.
For expats and longer-stay residents across Chalong, Bang Tao, and Rawai, I set up a proper follow-up schedule. Genital wart management is not a one-visit process for most people, and having a consistent clinic on the island matters for ongoing care.
Confidentiality is a real concern in a place as interconnected as Phuket. You do not need to explain your reason for visiting to anyone at your hotel or villa. You come in, you are seen, it stays between you and the clinic.
Telling Your Partner
This is the conversation most patients dread, and I understand why. HPV transmits even when there are no visible warts, so partner notification matters regardless of whether your partner has noticed anything.
Condoms reduce transmission risk but do not eliminate it. HPV spreads through skin-to-skin contact in the genital area, not only penetrative sex. If your partner is in Phuket, they can come in for an STI assessment at the same clinic, either during your visit or separately. If they are not here, they need to know so they can be tested at home. The doctor can help you think through how to have that conversation, and that is not an unusual thing to ask for.
If you have noticed a new lesion, have a history of genital warts, or had unprotected sex and want a full STI screen, Takecare Clinic Phuket is open for walk-in visits with no appointment needed. An English-speaking physician will assess you, start treatment where appropriate, and arrange full STI testing in the same visit. We see patients from across the island, from Patong to Rawai, Kata to Bang Tao, and everywhere between.
