HPV, human papillomavirus, is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, but it is not included in most standard STD panels. There is no blood test for it. Testing requires a specific DNA swab or cervical sample, and most people are never offered one unless they ask. At Takecare Clinic Phuket, walk-in HPV testing and Gardasil 9 vaccination are available daily with no appointment needed.
She had been living in Cherng Talay for two years, working remotely, no regular GP, and it had simply never come up. She came in for something else entirely. When I asked about her last cervical screen, she paused and said it had probably been before she left the UK. That was four years ago. No one had flagged it. No one had tested her for HPV.
This pattern is not unusual. I see it constantly across the expat community, from Bang Tao to Chalong, and it is not carelessness. It is a gap in how STI testing is typically offered.
Most people who ask for an STD test after a night in Patong, or as part of a general health check, walk away without an HPV result. Not because the clinic missed something, but because HPV is not on the standard panel. It requires a different kind of test entirely. Many patients have never been told this.
Why HPV Is the STI Most People Have Never Been Tested For
Standard STD panels test for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and sometimes hepatitis. HPV is not on that list, and there is a straightforward reason: there is no approved blood test for it. The virus lives in skin and mucosal cells, not the bloodstream. Detecting it requires a DNA swab or a cervical cell sample.
This creates a real gap. A patient can come in, request a full STD screen, get a clean result, and still be carrying a high-risk HPV strain without knowing it. It is not a failure of testing. It is a limit of what most panels are designed to catch.
HPV spreads through skin-to-skin genital contact. You do not need penetrative sex to transmit it. Condoms lower the risk but do not eliminate it. Because most infections cause no symptoms at all, the only way to know you carry a high-risk strain is to test specifically for it.
High-Risk vs Low-Risk: Not All HPV Is the Same
There are over 100 types of HPV. The ones that matter clinically fall into two groups.
Low-risk strains, most commonly HPV 6 and 11, cause genital warts. The warts are visible, sometimes uncomfortable, and treatable. They are not linked to cancer. High-risk strains, particularly HPV 16 and 18, can drive abnormal cell changes that, if left undetected over years, can progress toward cancer. They cause no visible symptoms at all.
This distinction matters for what test you need. If you have visible warts, a doctor can examine and treat them. If you want to know whether you carry a silent high-risk strain, you need an HPV DNA test. Those are two completely different conversations.
What HPV Actually Does: The Two Pathways
For most people, the immune system clears an HPV infection within one to two years. No treatment needed, no lasting effect. But not every infection clears. When a high-risk strain persists, it can cause cellular changes in the cervix, anus, or throat. Those changes are detectable on screening before they become anything worse.
The cancers linked to persistent high-risk HPV include cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the back of the throat and tonsils. Cervical cancer is the most well-documented, which is why Pap smears and HPV DNA co-testing exist as routine screening tools.
Low-risk HPV takes a different path. Genital warts can appear weeks or months after exposure. They are sometimes painless and easy to miss. Treatment options include cryotherapy and topical agents, both available here in Phuket.
HPV in Men: Why Testing and Vaccination Still Matter
HPV is not a women’s issue. Men carry and transmit high-risk HPV. They face their own cancer risks: penile cancer, anal cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer are all linked to persistent oncogenic HPV infection.
The honest limitation is this: there is currently no approved routine HPV DNA screening test for men without symptoms. If you have visible warts, a doctor can assess them. Silent high-risk infection in men cannot be detected the way it can in women with a cervical sample.
This makes vaccination the most important tool for men. Gardasil 9 covers HPV 16 and 18, the two strains responsible for most HPV-related cancers, as well as the strains that cause most genital warts. It works best before exposure, but it still offers meaningful protection in younger and mid-adult years. Current eligibility extends to age 45 for both men and women.
Does a Standard STD Test Check for HPV?
No. I want to be direct about this because it is one of the most common misunderstandings I deal with.
When patients ask for a full sexual health screen, the standard STD panel at most clinics covers HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and sometimes hepatitis B and C. HPV is not included by default. You have to ask for it by name.
If you are booking STD testing in Phuket and want HPV included, say so explicitly. Takecare Clinic Phuket can include HPV DNA testing, but it must be requested. Do not assume it is already on the panel.
How HPV Testing in Phuket Works: What the Process Involves
For women, HPV testing involves either a Pap smear, which looks at cervical cells for abnormal changes, or an HPV DNA test, which looks for the virus’s genetic material directly. These can be done together in a single visit and give a more complete picture. The sample is collected by swab during a pelvic examination. Results typically take a few days.
For men without symptoms, there is currently no routine HPV DNA test available. If genital warts are present, diagnosis is done by clinical examination. No lab test is needed for that.
If you have had unprotected sex and want to know your HPV status, the answer for a woman is: get the DNA test. For a man without visible symptoms, focus on vaccination if you have not had it, and book a sexual health consultation to discuss what monitoring makes sense.
The HPV Vaccine in Phuket: Who Can Still Benefit
Gardasil 9 is available at Takecare Clinic Phuket. You do not need to fly to Bangkok for it. You do not need an appointment. You do not need to restart a course you started somewhere else.
The vaccine is most effective when given before any sexual activity begins. But eligibility extends to age 45, and if you are in that range and have not been vaccinated, there is still meaningful benefit. Even if you have already been exposed to one or two HPV types, the vaccine protects against strains you have not yet encountered.
If you started a Gardasil 9 series in another country and did not finish it, bring your vaccination record. We continue from where you left off.
Getting HPV Tested in Phuket: What to Expect
Walk in. No appointment. That is the short version.
The longer version: you come in, tell us what you want tested, and we discuss what makes sense for your situation. For cervical screening and HPV DNA testing, we collect the sample here. For a genital warts assessment, the doctor examines directly. For vaccination, we can administer the first dose the same day and advise on timing for the next ones.
Confidentiality is a real concern in a small resort community. I hear this regularly from patients who do not want their travel companions, their hotel, or their employer to know why they came in. Testing at a private walk-in clinic means you control who knows. No referral letter. No paperwork sent anywhere without your say-so.
We see patients from across the island. The expat in Rawai who has not had a cervical screen in three years. The couple in Kata who want peace of mind after a holiday. The man in Kamala who noticed something and put off coming in for two weeks. All of them get the same calm, direct consultation in English with an actual physician. If you need to think through what tests to request or what any result means, that conversation happens here.
HPV is the most common STI in Phuket, and the one most people have never specifically been tested for. Takecare Clinic Phuket offers confidential HPV DNA testing for women, genital wart assessment for men, and Gardasil 9 vaccination for both, all available as a walk-in with no appointment needed. We serve patients across Phuket, including Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong, and Phuket Town. Come in and speak with one of our English-speaking physicians today.
Does a standard STD test in Phuket check for HPV?
No, and this surprises a lot of patients. Standard panels cover HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and sometimes hepatitis, but HPV requires a separate DNA test or cervical swab that is not included by default. If you want HPV tested at Takecare Clinic Phuket, ask for it specifically when you come in.
Can men get tested or vaccinated for HPV in Phuket?
There is no approved routine HPV DNA test for men without symptoms, but a doctor can assess genital warts with a visual examination if they are present. Gardasil 9 vaccination is recommended for men up to age 45 and is available at Takecare Clinic Phuket as a walk-in, no appointment needed.
I had unprotected sex in Patong last night. Should I get an HPV test?
HPV can spread through skin-to-skin genital contact, and condoms reduce but do not eliminate the risk. If you are a woman, requesting an HPV DNA test alongside a Pap smear is the most useful step. Come into Takecare Clinic Phuket, tell us what happened, and we will advise on the full picture including other STIs with relevant window periods.
Can I get the HPV vaccine in Phuket if I am over 26 or already started a series elsewhere?
Yes. Gardasil 9 is available at Takecare Clinic Phuket and eligibility extends to age 45 for both men and women. If you started a course elsewhere and have your vaccination record, we continue from where you left off without restarting the whole series.
If I test positive for HPV in Phuket, what happens next?
A positive HPV result does not mean cancer. High-risk strain positivity means closer monitoring and possibly a colposcopy referral, which our physicians will arrange and explain. Low-risk strains and visible warts have their own treatment options including cryotherapy, available here in Phuket. You will leave with a clear plan, not just a result.
I live in Chalong and have not had a cervical screen in years. Can I just walk in?
Yes, and this is exactly the situation we see regularly. Long-stay expats across Chalong, Rawai, and Bang Tao often go years without cervical screening simply because they have no regular GP. Walk into Takecare Clinic Phuket in Patong, and we can do a Pap smear and HPV DNA co-test in a single visit.
