What happens at your visit, step by step
The doctor first checks for hidden injuries: how fast you were going, whether you hit your head, whether you were wearing a helmet, and any pain in the neck, chest, abdomen or back. We examine each injured area, check movement, feeling and circulation in the limbs, and look for signs of a fracture. If there is any suspicion of a broken bone, we refer you straight to a nearby imaging centre for an X-ray and review the result with you the same day.
Road rash is cleaned thoroughly. Large or painful areas are numbed first with local anaesthetic, then we irrigate the wound and scrub out gravel, sand and asphalt. This matters because grit left in the skin causes infection and can leave permanent dark marks called traumatic tattooing. We cover the area with non-stick, moist dressings. Insurance, licences and police reports
Many travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents if the rider did not hold a valid motorcycle licence (usually a home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles) or was not wearing a helmet. Some also exclude riding after drinking alcohol or on bikes above a certain engine size. Check your policy wording before you ride, and after an accident, before you assume you are covered. We cannot tell you whether your insurer will pay, but we can make sure your medical paperwork is complete.

When to see a doctor
Come to a clinic the same day for any road rash, even if it looks minor, and for cuts, significant bruising, sprains or pain that stops you using a limb normally. Delayed cleaning makes infection and scarring more likely in Phuket’s heat. Come back urgently if a wound becomes red, swollen, hot or starts to ooze pus, or if you develop a fever.

Prevention and early detection
Wear a properly fastened helmet every time, including for short trips; it is also the law in Thailand. Long trousers, a jacket and closed shoes turn many road rash injuries into bruises. Ride slowly on sandy corners and wet hill roads, avoid riding after drinking, and do not ride a bike you are not licensed or experienced for. Check the brakes and tyres before you rent.
After a fall, look for delayed problems over the next 24 to 48 hours: increasing pain in a wrist or ankle can mean a missed fracture, and new headache, drowsiness or vomiting after a head knock needs hospital review.

Do I need an X-ray after a motorbike fall?
