Wegovy is a weekly semaglutide injection licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition. The dose starts low and increases over several months to reduce side effects. In Thailand, it is a prescription-only medication requiring a physician assessment before use. Takecare Clinic Phuket can carry out that assessment on a walk-in basis, no appointment needed.
A patient came in recently, a long-stay resident based in Chalong, who had been managing her weight for years alongside high blood pressure. Her GP back in the UK had mentioned Wegovy before she left. She assumed she would need to fly home to get a prescription. She did not.
If you are in Phuket and wondering the same thing, the answer is that a full eligibility assessment can happen here, in a single visit, without flying anywhere. What follows is what you actually need to know: who qualifies, what the dosing looks like, what to expect from the side effects in Phuket’s climate, and when to come in urgently.

Who Qualifies for Wegovy
The licensed criteria are clear. You qualify if your BMI is 30 or above. You also qualify if your BMI is 27 or above and you have at least one weight-related condition: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea. The SELECT trial, published in 2023, extended the evidence to adults with overweight and established cardiovascular disease, showing reduced rates of serious heart events in that group.
A physician assessment covers more than your BMI. Your full medical history, current medications, and any conditions that could make Wegovy unsuitable all need to be reviewed. That assessment happens in a single walk-in visit at Takecare Clinic Phuket.
Who Should Not Take Wegovy
Wegovy carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumours based on animal data. It is contraindicated if you or a family member has a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. It should not be used during pregnancy.
Use in patients with a history of pancreatitis should be discussed with a physician, as the prescribing label lists pancreatitis as a warning and precaution requiring monitoring and possible discontinuation. It is also not appropriate if you are already using another semaglutide or GLP-1 product. A physician will check all of this before prescribing.

Wegovy Dosage Schedule Explained
The dose is not fixed from the start. You begin low and increase gradually. This reduces nausea and other gut side effects while your body adjusts. The schedule from the prescribing label is as follows:
| Phase | Dose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Starting dose | 0.25 mg once weekly | 4 weeks |
| Step 2 | 0.5 mg once weekly | 4 weeks |
| Step 3 | 1.0 mg once weekly | 4 weeks |
| Step 4 | 1.7 mg once weekly | 4 weeks |
| Maintenance dose | 2.4 mg once weekly | Ongoing |
If side effects are hard to manage at any step, your doctor may delay moving up. The 2.4 mg maintenance dose is where most of the weight loss data applies.
Wegovy is injected under the skin in the stomach area, thigh, or upper arm. If you miss a dose and your next scheduled injection is more than two days away, take it as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled injection is within two days, skip the missed dose and continue your usual schedule. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed one.
How Much Weight You Can Realistically Expect to Lose
The STEP programme trials, used to license Wegovy, showed average body weight reduction of around 15 percent at 68 weeks in adults without diabetes. Results vary. Some people lose more, some less. A calorie deficit and regular physical activity are required alongside the medication for those results to hold.
Some appetite change is usually noticeable in the first few weeks. Measurable weight loss typically becomes clear between months two and three. If you have not lost at least five percent of your starting body weight after approximately 16 weeks on the maintenance dose, your prescriber should review whether continuing makes sense.
Is Wegovy Available in Thailand
Semaglutide is available in Thailand as a prescription-only medication. The brand name situation matters here. Ozempic, which contains semaglutide at lower doses and is licensed for type 2 diabetes, has been the more consistently available product in Thailand. Wegovy at the full 2.4 mg dose has had supply variability due to global demand and import cycles.
When you come in, a physician can advise what is currently available, whether the Wegovy formulation or an equivalent semaglutide product is appropriate, and prescribe accordingly. Do not buy semaglutide without a prescription from a pharmacy or online source. Products sold outside the prescription chain in Thailand vary in quality and dose accuracy.
Side Effects and How Phuket’s Heat Changes Things
Nausea is the most common side effect, particularly during dose increases. It is usually temporary. Vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation also occur, more often early in treatment.
Phuket’s heat adds a real practical layer to this. Nausea combined with heat and dehydration is more uncomfortable and more significant than the same symptoms in a cooler climate. If you are losing fluids from vomiting or diarrhoea, you will feel the effects faster here. Stay out of direct sun when symptoms are active. Drink small amounts regularly rather than large amounts at once. If you cannot keep fluids down for more than 24 hours, come in.
Serious Side Effects and When to Seek Help in Phuket
Some side effects need same-day assessment, not a wait-and-see approach.
Severe abdominal pain that does not go away, particularly pain that moves toward your back, is a warning sign for pancreatitis and needs urgent evaluation. Do not manage this at home. Severe right-sided abdominal pain can indicate gallbladder disease, which is also associated with semaglutide use. Changes to your vision, signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), and a fast heart rate at rest all need same-day attention.
Takecare Clinic Phuket has English-speaking physicians for urgent assessment. If symptoms suggest anaphylaxis, go directly to the nearest emergency department without stopping at a clinic first.
What Happens When You Stop Taking Wegovy
This is the part most patients are not told clearly. The drug manages weight rather than resolving the underlying condition. When you stop, appetite regulation returns to its previous baseline. Trial data, including the STEP 4 trial, show that a significant portion of lost weight returns within about one year of stopping, without continued lifestyle changes in place.
That does not mean Wegovy is not worth taking. It means the decision to start should include a plan for what comes next, whether that is long-term use, a step-down strategy, or structured lifestyle work to hold the ground gained. If you are considering stopping, discuss it with a physician first.
Practical Considerations for Wegovy in Phuket’s Climate
Inject on the same day each week. The pen should be stored in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. Once in use, it can be kept at room temperature below 30 degrees Celsius for up to 56 days per the prescribing label. Phuket regularly exceeds that threshold in direct sun, in a parked car, or in a beach bag. Keep the pen in a fridge or a cool bag. Do not leave it in your hotel room without air conditioning running.
Alcohol does not directly interact with semaglutide, but it adds calories, disrupts appetite signals, and combined with nausea during titration, makes the early weeks harder. A heavy night in Patong or a full beach day in Surin during the first month of treatment is not a great combination with dose increases. Plan around it.
